DUI Cases and SR22 Insurance In Nevada

May 29, 2009 by author · Leave a Comment

Reader’s Question:

What penalties are involved for DUI cases in Nevada? I know this would increase a person’s auto insurance rates, what can one do to possibly get cheap SR22 insurance?

Ben

Carson City, NV

Assuming that you are asking about penalties for first time DUI offenders in Nevada that would include:

  • Fine of $400 to $1,000;
  • Jail time of 2 days to 6 months or community service for 96 hours;
  • License suspension for 90 days;
  • Must attend a DUI program;
  • May be required to enroll in a alcohol treatment program if your BAC is .08 or more.

The court may also allow you to use your vehicle if you are given a restricted license. But that is only possible once half of your license suspension period is over.

To reinstate your license, you will be required to file for SR22 insurance. If I am not mistaken this needs to be maintained for 3 to 5 years from the conviction date, depending on the seriousness of your offense.

Shopping for SR22 insurance through the Internet can possibly help you find cheap SR22 insurance. You just need to carefully compare the SR22 insurance quotes that you can find. And the best advice I can give you is never drive if you are drunk.

Cheaper Car Insurance In Nevada

Reader’s Question:

I have an older vehicle here in Nevada and I wanted to get cheaper car insurance. I still have collision coverage and I was thinking, does it make sense to keep it?

Sam

Spring Valley, NV

If you only have liability coverage, it is the best way to have cheaper car insurance especially if you have an older car. Liability coverage would pay for all the expenses associated with the repairs of other vehicles affected during the accident. This type of coverage would not pay for any damages on your own car because collision and comprehensive coverage pays for those expenses. Although having cheaper car insurance, you would have to take a risk in getting just the liability coverage because you would have to cover the expenses of repairing your own vehicle.

Since you mentioned that you have an older car in Nevada, I assume that, of course, it doesn’t have much value as a brand new and latest model car. You won’t probably need to have collision and comprehensive coverage if the car’s value is $1500 or less, thus having yourself cheaper car insurance. If your vehicle endures a damage worth of $800 in the event of an accident, then you have a deductible of $500 and pay $300-premium for the extra coverage, it would not make financial sense to keep on paying for extra charges. You have to find out the level of risk you can take for yourself and the amount of coverage you need from your car insurance company.

SR22 Insurance Policy In Nevada

Reader’s Question:

What kind of SR22 insurance policy do I need to get here in Nevada if I’m required to have it but don’t own a car?

Isla

Henderson, NV

A lot of people are really confused as to what SR22 insurance policy they would get. Most motorists are not actually aware what SR22 insurance policy is so they are having difficulties once they are asked to get it. SR22 insurance is a proof of insurance and typically becomes a rider to an insurance policy. SR22 insurance policy is being required by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for motorists who have shown high risk tendencies. SR22 serves as a certification by the car insurance company that the driver has at least liability insurance.

Drivers who have citations for driving under the influence (DUI) are the most popular candidates to get an SR22 insurance policy. Other drivers who are required to get SR22 insurance as well are those who have been into many accidents or have gotten a lot of traffic tickets in a short period of time or those who have been to accidents that involved death.

In the state of Nevada, there are two kinds of SR22 insurance policies: owner and non-owner policy. Not all drivers who are asked to get an SR22 insurance policy have their own vehicles; however, they could be operating other vehicles so it will still be required of them to get an SR22 insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

I really don’t understand why I have to spend too much for my car insurance annually here in Nevada. Could you give me some pieces of advice as to how can I get even the least savings for my car insurance?

Hayden

Spring Valley, NV

Prior to settling with a specific car insurance coverage in Nevada, you have to compare more than a single car insurance quote for you to get the perfect opportunity of having the most affordable car insurance. There are a lot of Americans who don’t compare different online car insurance quotes so in the end, their auto insurance premium is higher than it should be. This is because they did not spend a little more time to make online car insurance quote comparisons and having a good deal of saving a lot of money.

There are certain things you need to follow so that you can get a lot of savings for your car insurance. You need to compare car insurance quotes from different online car insurance providers and obtain the highest deductible that you could pay. Ask for all the discounts that you are eligible for as well. You may go to the websites of different car insurance providers or you may just go to a website wherein you could compare car insurance quotes from more than one insurer. By choosing the latter, you can be able to get a lot of car insurance quotes from just one place by submitting your information once.

High Risk Auto Insurance Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I need to get back to driving after my driver’s license suspension because of DUI has been lifted here in Nevada. I know that my car insurance will increase because of so many reasons including an SR22, how much increase would it be?

Parker

Sparks, NV

Due to your DUI in Nevada, you will be classified by car insurance providers as high risk. Filing an SR22 with the state’s motor vehicle department would prove that you have car insurance coverage. However, not all insurers sell SR22, which means that it is just one of the obstacles you have to go through. The end result of your DUI and being a high risk driver will cost you a great deal of money. How much increase on your premiums would be based on why you are regarded as such, However, the insurance rates for a high risk driver normally scale from 15% more than similar low risk driver to more than triple the normal rates.

In case you have such as an awful driving history, you could be trapped in the state’s assigned-risk pool, which is the auto insurance provider’s last option. In this group, you will pay the steepest premiums available. However, be certain that you completely look around prior to jumping into the pool. A lot of car insurance providers offer high risk car insurance policy. An insurance agent of the state’s insurance department could advise you on who offers high risk car insurance in Nevada.

Auto Insurance Cancellation Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I am on the verge of having my car insurance policy being cancelled for reasons I can’t explain why. Will I have a hard time getting car insurance again here in Nevada because of a cancellation on my record?

Noemi

Reno, NV

If you have an auto insurance policy cancellation on your record, you may have a hard time getting insured again in Nevada depending on the reason why the old policy has been cancelled in the first place. In case the reason for the cancellation of the policy is because of failing to pay the premium on time, you may be able to have the policy reactivated from the same car insurance company if you have an excellent record. However, a lot of car insurance companies would now ask you to pay the whole amount of the annual insurance rate up-front if you have a missed payment on your insurance record.

Moreover, a lot of car insurance companies run away from newly cancelled policyholders since they view a cancellation more of a risk to them. As a matter of fact, some car insurance providers ask insurance applicants if there is a cancellation of policy in their record for the last three to five years. That is because normally, they don’t want to insure drivers whose policies have been cancelled in the recent years. In case your coverage has been terminated and your car insurance company doesn’t want to reinstate it, you have to find car insurance coverage somewhere else. You can be insured again but they may see you as a higher risk so the premiums might be higher as well.

Auto Insurance Coverage Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I didn’t have the time to talk to my auto insurance company or an insurance agent here in Nevada. I was wondering if I can cancel some coverage in my policy to save money. If so, what are those that I can just simply eliminate from my policy?

Geoffrey

Reno, NV

The types of coverage that are mandated vary in different states so you can decide personally on the amount of coverage that you will get for your auto insurance in Nevada. Your auto insurance needs will mostly depend on your age, the value of the car that you drive and your other assets. In Nevada, you have to at least carry auto liability insurance. This will protect you if you cause injury or damage to another party or another property while driving your vehicle. While your personal properties get bigger, it’s essential that you raise your liability coverage. Otherwise, your most precious properties can be help as payment in case your liability insurance doesn’t cover everything that’s needed to be covered.

The types of coverage that you may opt to cancel include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage; medical payments coverage if you have health insurance; and also collision and comprehensive coverage. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will cover you from losses caused by other drivers who are uninsured, underinsured and those who “hit and run.” Medical payments coverage would cover you for your medical bills caused by the accident regardless of who was at-fault. Collision and comprehensive coverage will pay for any damage on your vehicle but if you have an older car and it doesn’t have much value, it may not be sensible to keep these types of coverage.

Business Car Insurance Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I usually drive around for some matters about business my boss wants me to do using my own car. I don’t know if I will still be covered by my car insurance here in Nevada even if I use my car for that. How will I know for sure that my car insurance still protects me when I do business by means of my own car?

Lane

Las Vegas, NV

The majority of big companies have commercial car insurance policies that give protection to their employees when they are travelling on official business. In case you are using your personal vehicle on business and you are involved in as accident, your own car insurance policy in Nevada may kick in first, however, there would also be a possibility that your company’s insurance would compensate before your own. Make certain that you ask your boss and an insurance agent or your insurer to know the details.

Your boss must understand the basic information about the car insurance coverage for his/her employees. Be certain that you are familiar with how it works at your business. In case you have coverage from your company policy, ask your boss as to who you must contact in the event that there is an accident and take with you that info in your vehicle. No matter whether you talk to your own insurer or your employer’s insurer, you need to inform the insurance adjuster that you are driving the vehicle on business. Your own insurer must not decline your claim just because you are driving on a business, but they may try to get back the money from your company’s insurer afterwards. In case of an accident during a business trip, it would be better to begin at your employer’s insurer. That is because it would also be better if you have fewer or no claims on your personal car insurance history.

Auto Insurance Deductibles Nevada NV

November 25, 2008 by author · Leave a Comment
Filed under: DUI Lawyer Nevada

Reader’s Question:

I’m looking to buy an auto insurance policy here in Nevada, and I have a question about deductibles, What is it and how exactly does it work?

Miles

Reno, NV

A Deductible is the amount of money deducted from the payment coming from your car insurance policy after your claim has been approved. Auto insurance providers are obligated to make sure that you understand the amount of deductibles that will be stipulated within your auto insurance policy before you agree to accept the said insurance policy. For example, if you file for damages brought upon by a car collision and you have a $250 deductible under your policy, that amount will be deducted from the total payment or settlement you receive from your carrier or insurance provider. So if you were awarded $1000 then you actually only get $750, with the stated example. Keep in mind though, if the repair costs less than the deductible, then don’t go for the deductible since you will have to end up paying the insurance company the difference.

Deductibles are not fixed, most auto insurance policies would allow you to set the deductible higher, or lower, depending on your preference. It is actually recommended to increase your deductible if you drive an older vehicle or don’t drive your vehicle that much. You can actually lower down your regular car insurance premiums with a lower deductible. Also, each portion of your policy there in Nevada, such as for collision and comprehensive insurance, will carry their own respective amounts of deductibles.

Gap Auto Insurance Nevada NV

Reader’s Question:

I’m currently leasing a vehicle here in Nevada and was advised to get gap insurance for it. What is gap insurance?

Euhmir

Henderson, NV

Gap Insurance is a form of insurance that protects against liability incurred in the event a leased or financed vehicle is damaged or is totaled beyond repair. What Gap Insurance will do is to basically “fill the gap” between the amount that you already paid for the vehicle and the amount needed to completely pay off the lease on the said vehicle. If said vehicle is also financed or acts as a collateral for a loan and the monetary value of the vehicle is lost due to theft or accident, Gap Insurance will take care of paying off the debt to the lenders. Some banks or lender’s have recently, either highly encouraged or required borrowers to get gap insurance for their vehicles for car loans and auto financing purposes.

Now the question is, do you really need one? It actually depends. What’s the likelihood of losing your car to accident or theft there in Nevada? If the car is being financed and you’ve already paid a significant portion of the loan then it may not be cost effective to get gap insurance since you may be paying more for the actual insurance as compared to the actual cash value remaining on the vehicle. If you are required by your lenders see if they are willing to compromise with comprehensive insurance coverage instead which may prove cheaper since it should already be included under most car insurance policies you take.
